Choosing the right material for your home rugs
If you are looking for the perfect rug for your new home, or if you are planning to redecorate and redesign specific rooms in your house, there are several factors that you need to look at when making this decision. Relevant factors that you need to consider in choosing area rugs are patterns and designs, size, shape, and even the material. While the importance of these aesthetic considerations may not be denied, perhaps the most important and yet the most overlooked consideration is the material of the rug. Different materials offer different benefits and disadvantages in terms of price and function. Knowing what different rug materials have to offer is important in choosing one which perfectly meets your unique needs.
Modern rugs and carpets now come in a variety of materials: wool, nylon, polypropylene, polyester, and PTT. Among these materials, wool is the only naturally occurring type. It has the advantage of absorbing dyes fairly quickly and retaining the colors for a considerable period of time. Although wool is pretty much abundant, it has the disadvantage of being significantly more expensive than other rug materials. Over the years, nylon has become the most extensively used synthetic material for rugs and carpets because designs and patterns can easily be printed on the material. The downside is that nylon rugs can stain easily. Polypropylene is a cheap raw material used in popular carpet and cheap rugs, although it is avoided by many consumers because colors tend to wear easily. Polyester has also become a popular choice for rug manufacturers primarily because of its cheap price; while it is generally stain resistant, it has the disadvantage that it can be easily crushed or matted down. Finally, we have PTT, a material which is very similar to polyester and dries very quickly and is known to be mold resistant.
